Kate Upton is walking, talking proof that women shouldn’t be afraid of weight when it comes to their workouts. The 25-year-old bombshell is opening up about her workout routine, saying she used to avoid weight training, but can’t get enough of it now.
“To me, exercise is about working really hard in the gym to be healthy and feel good and confident about my body,” Upton says in the September issue of Shape. “Weight training helps me do that the best. Lifting heavy weights leans you out if you do it the correct way.”
What seemed an impossible feat is now what drives the actress and model at the gym. With the help of trainer Ben Bruno, she no longer scoffs at pulling 500-pound weights — in fact, she welcomes the challenge.
“When I started training with him, he would say, ‘Let’s put 500 pounds on the sled,’ and I would immediately say, ‘I can’t do that.’ So he started standing on the sled so I couldn’t see how much weight was on there. Now my attitude has changed completely, and I’m always pushing myself to do more.”
In addition to pulling a 500-pound sled across the weight room, Upton does hip thrusts with a 200-pound bar across her lap — an accomplishment that’s a point of pride for her.
Upton’s newfound love for weight training has had ancillary benefits beyond boosting strength and confidence. It’s also helped alleviate the stress of keeping up with the fashion industry’s expectations. “I changed the battle inside my head to be about strength and having balance in my life instead of fitting into a pair of jeans,” she says.
Another thing contributing to Upton’s workout motivation is allowing herself to have a little “bad” every day — a few french fries, some chocolate or (her favorite) cheese and bread. Knowing she has a postworkout treat to look forward to definitely helps fuel the heavy lifting.
