Shawn Johnson is opening up about suffering a miscarriage just two days after learning she was pregnant. Over the weekend the Olympic gold medalist and her husband, Andrew East, shared their tragic news in an emotionally charged YouTube video titled “pregnancy + heartbreak,” managing to inspire us with their bravery, honesty and hope.
Video of the Day
“The past 48 hours have been some of the happiest, scariest and saddest times of my life,” the 25-year-old bravely captioned the 20-minute long video. “My husband Andrew and I found out that we were unexpectedly pregnant, only to find out hours later some tragic news.”
The video documented the couple’s 24-hour pregnancy journey — from the moment a teary-eyed Johnson learns she is expecting after taking two positive pregnancy tests to inside the doctor’s office where she and her husband learn she has suffered a miscarriage after experiencing unexpected bleeding.
“So it’s been a roller coaster of a few days. We just got back from the doctor, and I’m no longer pregnant,” Johnson explained. “Somehow, I lost the pregnancy already. It sucks. It’s definitely no fun, guys … and having a doctor confirm that we miscarried doesn’t feel good. I’ve cried enough today. I don’t need to cry anymore.”
While Johnson’s video is heartbreaking, being the true role model that she is, she and her husband wanted to share their story because they feel like “a lot of people go through this.” She also manages to offer a hopeful message, maintaining she is “optimistic for what is next.” Toward the end of the video she and her hubby hold up some baby Converse sneakers she gave to him when she broke the news she was pregnant. “We’ll use them again, of course,” she tells viewers. Is this woman a kick-ass hero or what?
According to the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), early pregnancy loss occurs in about 10 percent of known pregnancies, with most miscarriages occurring in the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. While it’s usually impossible to determine the exact cause of a miscarriage, most are believed to be the result of chromosomal abnormalities. Bleeding — similar to Johnson’s — is the most common sign of early pregnancy loss.
By sharing her experience with the world, Johnson is helping to open up a dialogue about miscarriage — which up until recently was seen as a taboo topic.
Shawn Johnson recently offered her life and fitness advice to the LIVESTRONG audience as part of an exclusive interview in our STRONGER Women series. Our thoughts are with her during this challenging time.
