If you dread everything from the treadmill to the stair climber, you’re in good company — even Henry Cavill, aka Superman, hates cardio (but reminds us to superhero up and get it done anyway).

“Pre-breakfast cardio done! Don’t feel like doing it? Neither did I, but now it feels goood. Just get a coffee down ya!” the “Man of Steel” wrote in an Instagram post.
Why is cardiovascular exercise so great, anyway? Not only can it help you burn calories and fat, but it can also improve heart health and reduce blood pressure, cholesterol and even blood sugar. And Cavill was also quick to point out that you don’t need to run a marathon to reap the benefits. “It doesn’t have to be fast (unless you’re training for that). Just go out and jog gently for 20 minutes or so and build up over time,” he added. “You will not regret it, I promise.”
The Centers for Disease control and Prevention (CDC) agrees, recommending 150 minutes (two hours and 30 minutes) a week of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes (one hour and 15 minutes) a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity to reap health benefits.
You can also maximize health benefits by pairing cardio with strength training, something Cavill also does, according to his Instagram.
One Boston University study found that endurance training (such as running) when paired with weightlifting can reduce body fat and improve metabolic parameters like insulin resistance — and the list goes on. More benefits include increased bone density, improved balance and reduced risk of chronic illness, increased bone, muscle and tissue strength, decreased risk of injury and an easier ability to maintain healthy body weight.
If the thought of spending 30 minutes on the treadmill doesn’t exactly appeal to you, there are many other options out there, ranging from cycling to rowing.
