The Best Night Creams for Oily Skin

Although it may seem counterproductive, moisturizing oily skin is an important task in supporting skin health. The key to avoiding an oil-slick on your face is to choose the right kind of moisturizers for both day and night use. When you're evaluating potential night creams, always look for formulas that are made specifically for your skin type. If you can't find anything you like, you can always make your own.

Remember to Moisturize

Although many people believe that cleansing alone is sufficient skin care for oily skin, it's also important to moisturize your face -- especially at night when your skin cells do most of their repair work. The right moisturizer helps calm skin, potentially encouraging your skin to produce less oil, depending on the formula.

Make Your Own

If you're not opposed to rolling up your sleeves and making your own night cream, you can control the quality and types of ingredients used and can tailor the formula exactly to your skin's needs. If your oily skin is prone to acne, make your own light, acne-fighting moisturizer by combining 1 teaspoon each of water, glycerin and honey for every 1 package of natural, unflavored gelatin. The gelatin helps tighten your pores; honey moisturizes and kills bacteria and glycerin helps nourish your skin. Avoid using heavy cream as an ingredient so as not to clog pores.

Swap It Out

Avoid overly thick products that contain waxy, emollient ingredients since they may cause pore congestion. Instead, swap your rich night cream for a gel or serum that's made for oily skin. These lighter-weight products still moisturize your skin, but they're formulated to be lighter and avoid clogging pores. Some examples includes Kate Somerville's Quench Hydrating Face Serum which was named among the best face serums by "Real Simple" magazine.

Pick One

If you’re considering making a quick visit to your local beauty counter, check out SkinCeuticals' Renew Overnight Oily night cream, which was named the best night cream for oily skin by "InStyle" in 2012. "Elle" magazine recommends Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, which is appropriate for all skin types to hydrate without leaving behind a greasy feel. Also try Philosophy's Help Me, which serves as an alternative to prescription retinol, helping to treat acne and improve skin texture.
