The P90X Extreme Home Fitness Training System is a 90-day intense training program in a 12-DVD set featuring workouts for specific body parts, interval-style cardio and martial arts-inspired workouts, and stretch and yoga routines, says AceFitness.com. Many of the DVDs utilize strength training exercises that can be performed with resistance bands if you're a beginner.

Choosing a Resistance

Most resistance bands are color-coded as to resistance level. However, the width of the band is the best way to tell how difficult a resistance band will be. This is an importance aspect, because you need to be able to perform various exercises and feel the resistance. Resistance bands can range anywhere from $5 to $20 in cost, and can be purchased online or at any local sporting goods store.

Making the Resistance

Tony Horton, the instructor of P90X, will give you step-by-step instructions on how to perform each exercise. Some exercise will require you to stand tall to perform the exercise, while others require you to bend over. One band can do the job because you make a loop with the band to make it more difficult. Another option is to buy a set of bands so you can easily switch among them during exercises.

How Do the Resistance Bands Work?

P90X is centered around muscle confusion, which means it's always mixing up your routine so you continue to see results. Your body is highly adaptable, and when you go into the gym day after day after day and perform the same workout over and over, it's going to get used to it. The resistance bands are durable and versatile. They can be stretched to mimic any dumbbell exercise with some innovation from P90X.

Increasing Resistance

When you can perform 12 to 15 repetitions of most of the exercises with your resistance band, then you need to make it tougher. This can be done by opening your legs wider or creating a loop in the center of the band to increase resistance. Purchasing a variety pack of bands, which usually come with three, is another way to have different levels of resistance readily available.

Resistance Band Review

P90X is an intense fitness program and is recommended for experienced exercisers. Resistance bands are good for beginners to start with so they can complete the workouts. Dumbbells will help you build more muscle, but resistance bands will keep you lean. Resistance bands are inexpensive, portable and offer a full body workout.
