Dulce de leche is made from slowly heating sweetened condensed milk on the stove top. It can be made into a sauce or a carmel-like candy. The sweet treat is popular in Latin America, and is also known as milk caramel. The sauce is used to flavor candies and other sweet desserts like cakes, cookies and ice cream. Once you make dulce de leche, you can store it safely in your refrigerator.

Place the cooking pan filled with the finished dulce de leche in a bowl with ice water to help it cool completely. Avoid filling the bowl too full with ice water, or it will come into contact with the dulce de leche. Stir the dulce de leche frequently until it cools completely.

Pour the dulce de leche into airtight containers.

Place the airtight containers in the refrigerator. The dulce de leche will last for one month.
