How to Get Smooth Facial Skin

Achieving a smooth and radiant completion can seem overwhelming with the myriad of products and suggested regimens on the market. It may appear easier to skimp on skincare and pile on the makeup to fake the glow instead. At the end of the day however, taking care of your skin is the most important step, as it will affect both the ease with which makeup glides on and how well your skin ages. Smooth facial skin is possible and is best achieved with a simplified daily routine.

Video of the Day

Step 1

Remove all makeup by massaging an oil-based makeup remover into your skin, and rinsing with warm water. Makeup can dry out skin and it is best to start with a clear surface when achieving a deep cleanse. As oil attracts oil, oil-based removers work well on even oily and acne-prone skin to draw out impurities and clarify without irritating skin.

Step 2

Pick up a dime-sized amount of facial exfoliant and work it into your skin using a circular motion. Avoid the eyes, nose and mouth. Focus on areas with dark spots or acne scars to help renew the surface. Use a naturally derived exfoliant, such as a product with a sugar or crushed shell base, as this is suited to all skin types. Rinse the exfoliant from your face with warm water and pat dry with a clean towel. Exfoliate only once a week to avoid drying out skin.

Step 3

Cleanse skin with a gentle cleanser, using the same technique as with the exfoliant. Balm and cream cleansers work well for normal, dry and sensitive skin to remove impurities while maintaining skin’s natural moisture barrier and are ideal for softening with daily use. Cleanse with a salicylic acid-based cleanser to combat breakouts if you have oily or acne-prone skin.

Step 4

Soak a cotton pad in some toner formulated for your skin type, and sweep it over your face. The toner will help to target any skin type-specific issues such as acne, dryness or excess oil production. Cleanse and tone morning and night.

Step 5

Apply a gentle moisturizer to your skin. Use a lightweight formula with SPF during the day, to protect skin while adding softness. Choose a shine-control moisturizer during the day if you have oily skin. At night, opt for antioxidant-laden moisturizers that aren’t too heavy, to avoid clogging pores. Gel and oil-based moisturizers are ideal for re-balancing all skin types overnight. Oil-based moisturizers are safe for even oily skin, as they regulate skin's oil levels and prevent it from overproducing oil on its own.
