Age spots, or solar lentigines, are small brown marks that occur mainly on the face, arms and shoulders because of the overexposure of these areas to sunlight, according to the Mayo Clinic. In addition to aging and sun exposure, a person can also be genetically predisposed to the formation of age spots. Tea tree oil, an essential oil that is derived from a plant native to Australia, can be used to reduce the appearance of age spots.

Wash the affected area with a face or body wash formulated for your particular skin type. Rinse the soap away with warm water and allow the area to dry.

Mix 2 tbsp. water and 1 tbsp. tea tree oil in a small bowl. Tea tree oil should be diluted in water to avoid irritation to the skin.

Soak a cotton ball in the mixture.

Dab the cotton ball onto the affected area once a day before bedtime.

Tip

Avoid using this mixture around the eye area as it could cause potential damage to the eye.
