Smoking isn't only bad for your health, but it also may affect your appearance. Smoking for only ten years may cause wrinkles to form on the skin, according to the MSN Living article "Smoking: Does it Cause Wrinkles?" Although wrinkles above the upper lip, also known as perioral wrinkles, may be unattractive, they are not medically serious. Your doctor may recommend a cosmetic treatment or surgical procedure to minimize the appearance of upper lip wrinkles.

Stop smoking before seeking treatment. Even if you have a successful cosmetic treatment that eliminates your wrinkles, they will only return if you continue smoking. Get a cosmetic procedure to eliminate lip wrinkles only when you are dedicated to quitting smoking.

Step 2

Apply a retinoid cream to the upper lip if your doctor prescribes it. Retinoid cream may help exfoliate skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Side effects of retinoid creams may include redness and dryness of the skin.

Filler injection.

Get filler injections on the upper lip. Your dermatologist may inject collagen, botulinum or fat into the lips to fill out depressed areas of the lips, according to the American Academy of Dermatology in the article "Facial Skin Rejuvenation." Filler injections do not permanently reduce wrinkles and may need to be repeated every few months.

Step 4

Consult your dermatologist about microdermabrasion to make skin above the lips look more even. During a microdermabrasion procedure, your doctor will apply an abrasive material to the skin that removes some skin cells on the top layer of skin. When the skin heals it may look smoother and free of wrinkles.

Step 5

Get a chemical peel.

Get a chemical peel to reduce wrinkles. Your cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist may place a liquid on the affected area that burns away the top layer of skin. The skin may be red and irritated after the treatment, but as the skin heals, the wrinkles may be less and less noticeable.
