A sinus infection, also known as acute sinusitis, happens when your nasal cavities become swollen and inflamed. Ear pain can result from pressure build up. Treating your sinus infection will ease your ear pain. Sinusitis is often caused by colds and allergies but can also be a result of other medical conditions.

Prescribed medicine is not often given unless your condition worsens. Home remedies can be useful for easing your discomfort, however, many herbal ingredients do not have scientific evidence proving the safety or effectiveness of their use.

All Natural Antibiotics

Collodial silver is an anti-infective used to treat bacterial infections. Dr. Lyn Hanshew, M.D, a research scientist and expert speaker, recommends collodial silver as a natural alternative but does caution against use of unproven products. She points out that not all products containing colloidal silver are proven to be safe and effective.

Collodial silver contains tiny silver particles that are suspended in liquid. You may experience several side effects when taking colloidal silver including argyria, a non-reversible condition that turns your skin a bluish-gray color. The Food and Drug Association does not consider colloidal silver to be a safe or effective treatment option.

Herbal Nasal Sprays

These sprays temporarily relieve symptoms that result from inflamed sinus passages. The nasal spray disperses a mist solution into your nasal cavity and eases pain, congestion, runny nose and sneezing. Spearmint is a common ingredient found in herbal nasal sprays.

Spearmint is used as a vapor therapy to treat the symptoms of headaches, migraines, and sinusitis. Similar to peppermint, spearmint is a non-irritant and less pungent. There is not enough evidence to prove spearmint is effective for treating sinusitis ear pain, however.

Water Therapy

You can moisten the lining in your nose by inhaling water vapors. A humidifier will make the air in a room moist and cause less irritation to the sensitive lining of your nose. Running a shower is also another way to inhale water vapor. Turn on the shower for 10 minutes or longer allowing the bathroom to fill with steam while you inhale the vapor.

MayoClinic.com suggests drinking lots of water. Water will help dilute mucous secretions and will help promote drainage. Avoid caffeine or alcoholic beverages as they can make your symptoms worse.

Warm Compress

Using a warm compress can also ease your facial pain caused by sinusitis. As often as needed, take a warm, damp cloth and apply it to your face. The cloth should rest on the areas around your nose, cheeks and eyes to best ease sinus pain.

Nasal Rinse

If you are suffering from acute sinusitis then your nasal cavity is not draining properly. Mucus builds up and does not discharge as it should. Using a nasal rinse can help clear out the sinuses. You can use a nasal saline solution a few times a day to gently rinse out the sinuses.

Elevate Your Head

When you are sleeping at night or resting during the day, elevate your head. Prop up a couple of pillows so your head is raised. This will allow your sinuses to drain and thus congestion will be reduced.
