Twizzlers is a confection made by the Hershey Company that consist of soft, twisted ropes of licorice candy. Made primarily from corn syrup, flour, sugar and cornstarch, Twizzlers come in either red, black or fruit varieties. Black Twizzlers are made of the traditional licorice extract flavoring. While not generally considered a significant source of nutrition, a serving of licorice Twizzlers can provide some carbohydrates in the diet.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a standard serving size of black licorice Twizzlers consists of two pieces at a total of 22 g, 20 of which consist of carbohydrates. Around 15 g of that amount is made of sugar. The same serving has no fat or protein. Two grams are made up of other nutrients and water. A two-piece serving of licorice Twizzlers contains small amounts of certain minerals. The highest of these is iron at around 0.03 mg per serving or just under 4 percent of the daily recommended intake. Other minerals are only available in trace quantities and include copper, phosphorous, potassium, selenium, sodium and zinc.
Licorice root contains glycyrrhizic acid, also known as glycyrrhizin. This substance contributes to both the sweetness and distinctive flavor provided by licorice extract. The Hershey Company uses both genuine licorice extract and similar-tasting anise oil to flavor licorice Twizzlers. The intake of licorice candy with real extract in large quantities can produce significant side effects including headache, sodium retention, potassium loss, hypertension and heart irregularities, according to the Hershey products website.
