Lap-Band surgery involves placing an adjustable band around the upper stomach, creating an egg-sized pouch, says LAP-BAND. Patients cannot eat as much as before, but they must choose their foods wisely to lose weight and keep it off. Milk and Cheese
After Lap-Band surgery, choose low-fat or nonfat dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, milk or cottage cheese to provide protein and calcium to your diet. Limit dairy servings to one oz. of cheese per day and up to two cups of milk or yogurt, according to LAP-BAND. Avoid dairy products high in fat or sugar, including ice cream, milkshakes and full-fat cheese, as these items may cause you to stop losing weight.
Appropriate sources of animal protein include beef, pork, chicken, turkey and flaky fish, says LAP-BAND. Choose two to four oz. of lean cuts of meat and avoid higher fat selections such as duck and marbled steaks. Remove skin or visible fat and prepare it by grilling, microwaving, roasting or steaming it. Avoid fried entrees as they are too high in fat. Many patients find shrimp and other shellfish difficult to digest, so try small amounts or avoid them altogether.
Eggs provide protein in an easily digestible form. Scramble an egg using nonstick spray in the skillet or poach it in water to avoid adding fat. Try an omelet made of egg whites or egg substitute to limit cholesterol intake. Eat one or two servings of fruit every day for vitamins and fiber, recommends LAP-BAND. Choose from a wide variety of fresh, frozen and canned fruits, including peaches, pears, apples, berries and pears. Avoid fruits canned in heavy syrup or otherwise prepared with added sugar. Limit fruit juices because they do not fill you up as well as whole fruit. Many patients find citrus fruits difficult to digest, so remove all pulp before eating or avoid them altogether. Dried fruits contain high amounts of sugar and calories per serving so choose other forms instead.
Eat two or three servings per day of vegetables for fiber and other nutrients, says LAP-BAND. Once or twice a week, serve dried beans or peas for their high fiber and protein content. Top brown rice with black beans and tomatoes or try lentil soup for a healthy lunch or dinner. Include vegetables such as spinach and mushrooms in your omelet and munch on fresh carrots and green peppers. However, avoid fibrous vegetables such as asparagus and celery if you find them hard to digest.
Choose one or two servings of whole grain bread or cereals per day, says LAP-BAND. Their fiber will help to fill you up and prevent constipation. Eat one serving of oatmeal topped with nonfat milk for breakfast or top whole wheat toast with low-fat peanut butter. Avoid refined or white breads and products made with sugar and fat, including pastries. Soft bread, pasta or white rice may block the stomach opening so avoid them if necessary.
