The Best Way to Get Rid of Dark Scars

A scar develops on your skin’s surface after an injury, and a healed acne pimple can leave one behind as well. The American Academy of Dermatology states that the color, texture and severity of your scars will depend on several factors such as genetics, skin tone, and the location and depth of the wound. Those with complexions of color tend to develop dark scars, also known as hyperpigmentation. These will fade over time, but you can also speed up the process by using certain at-home products. Apply these daily to help get rid of your dark scars.

Step 1

Apply a scar cream that contains silicone to refine and lighten dark marks. According to “Allure” magazine, dermatologist Jeanette Graf states that this will soften scar tissue and help reduce the severity of your scar’s appearance. Smooth the cream onto clean skin twice a day.

Step 2

Smooth on an antioxidant serum once the scar cream has absorbed. “Elle” magazine recommends looking for a product that contains licorice, mulberry, grape or green tea extracts, which will even out your skin, reduce the look of dark marks and protect your skin from environmental damage. Smooth on a drop of the serum over any areas where you have dark marks, and wait for it to soak in before moving on.

Step 3

Put sunscreen on every morning. The American Academy of Dermatology says that this will help keep the sun from making your scars turn darker. Cover your scars with clothing, if possible, whenever you are outdoors, and reapply the sunscreen every few hours as needed.

Step 4

Use a chemical peel twice a week at night after cleansing. “Elle” recommends a product that is glycolic acid-based, which dermatologist Jeanine Downie, M.D., says will even out the texture and tone of your skin. The American Academy of Dermatology adds that a chemical peel can make dark scars fade more quickly and help them appear smoother and more even. Apply a thin layer of the peel on top of your scars, and allow it to dry before rinsing it off with tepid water and a washcloth. Pat dry, and reapply the silicone scar cream.
