Weight loss requires using more calories than you consume. Energy output includes energy used for physical activity and resting energy expenditure, the energy required for the body's normal functions at rest. Thermogenic products containing ingredients like caffeine, one of the main ingredients in Fenphedra, increase resting energy expenditure. The US Food and Drug Administration does not regulate weight loss supplements, including Fenphedra, for effectiveness and safety.

The active ingredients list published on Fenphedra.com includes caffeine in the form of dicaffeine malate; chocamine, sourced from the seeds used to make chocolate; phenylethylamine, an endorphin-releasing chemical found in chocolate, yellow cheeses, berries and red wine; synephrine hydrochloride from bitter orange; and Humulus lupus, commonly known as hops used to make beer and ale.
Thermogenesis releases energy in the form of heat in the body through biochemical reactions or by stimulation with chemicals to increase metabolism. According to a study published in "Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism" in December 2009, a thermogenic product blend increased resting energy expenditure by 17.3 percent at hour 1, 19.6 percent at hour 2 and 15.3 percent at hour 3, compared to an overall decrease in resting energy expenditure in the placebo group. This study did not use Fenphedra, though the blend did contain caffeine and chocamine. Additional research provided by National Toxicology Program showed that synephrine partially stimulated breakdown of fat cells in rats, hamsters and dogs.
Phenylethylamine and synephrine in Fenphedra may reduce appetite. Phenylethylamine, an amphetamine-like chemical, raises blood glucose just like after eating a meal, producing a feeling of well-being. Though the effectiveness of synephrine for weight loss still needs research, literature reviewed by the National Toxicology Program showed synephrine reduced food intake and body weight gain in rats.
Fenphedra and Mood
Fenfendra ingredients may act as stimulants or sedatives. Caffeine acts as a stimulant and may reduce fatigue and improve mood. Phenylethylamine, a chemical present in chocolate, cheese, berries and red wine, releases endorphins in the brain that reduce pain and stress. According to “Alternative Medicine Review, Humulus lupus, the Latin name for hops used in brewing beer, may reduce restlessness and anxiety.
Consult with a physician or pharmacist to determine if ingredients in Fenphedra will interfere with prescribed medications or herbal supplements. Ingredients in Fenphedra may cause headaches, sleep disturbances, sensitivity to light and anxiousness. According to the National Toxicology Program, side effects from the combination of synephrine and caffeine may cause heart rhythm changes, high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.
