Turkey is a versatile meat that you can enjoy at your Thanksgiving feast, as leftovers, or even for breakfast. Aside from surrounding the bird with the traditional sides that you see in late November, turkey is also a good choice to include in stews, soups, casseroles and other dishes. The amount of calories that a pound of turkey provides can vary according to what part of the turkey you choose and how it’s processed and prepared.

Light or Dark

Light turkey meat and dark turkey meat contain differing amounts of calories for the same weight because dark meat has more fat. Light meat from a roasted turkey contains 667 calories per pound, while dark meat contains 935 calories. Fresh, raw turkey sausage, which might be a mixture of both kinds of meat, contains 700 calories per pound.
