These shots are intended to improve energy and boost metabolism. Other weight loss shots include the hormone HCG. Shots of vitamin B12 are not likely to give you any extra energy to help with weight loss unless you already have a deficiency in the vitamin, in which case your doctor may recommend injections. Jennifer K. Nelson, M.S., R.D., L.D. states that injections of the hormone HCG are used along with calorie restriction, and the weight loss that results from this combination is due to the calorie restriction. Any program that uses shots to help you lose weight is not likely to provide long term results; you may regain the weight after you stop receiving the shots.
If your diet shot is used along with a severe calorie restriction diet, it may be hard for you to reach your nutritional needs. This can result in lack of energy and illness. Side effects of some diet shots, such as the HCG hormone shot, include headache, irritability and fatigue.
The safety of using a HCG hormone shot is uncertain, and the hormone has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for weight control use. Using injections to control your weight can also dissuade you from making the lifestyle changes necessary for permanent weight loss.
To lose weight successfully, Medline Plus states that you must use more calories than you eat. Rather than receiving diet shots as a quick fix, choose healthy low calorie foods and eat smaller portions. Exercise most days of the week and focus on a healthy lifestyle to lose weight.
