The number of calories in a 1-oz serving of cheese depends directly on the type of cheese you prefer. If you are calorie conscious, understanding the calorie content -- as well as the fat content -- of some common cheeses may help guide your choices.

According to, a 1-oz -- or 1 slice -- serving of cheddar cheese contains around 113 calories. In addition, this serving size has 9.3 grams of fat, 5.9 of those grams being saturated.


A 1-oz serving of mozzarella cheese that contains part skim milk has 72 calories. This serving also contains 2.9 grams of saturated fat and 4.5 grams total fat. Although a lower-calorie cheese, beware of pizza and salads piled high with mozzarella, as the calories and fat can quickly add up.


Swiss cheese contains 106 calories, 5 grams of saturated fat and 7.8 grams total fat per 1-oz serving. If you like to add a slice or two of Swiss to your favorite sandwich, one slice of Swiss represents a 1-oz serving size.


One slice of American cheese is approximately 1 oz. This serving size contains 105 calories. There are 8.8 grams of fat in a slice of American cheese, and 5.5 of those grams are saturated.


A 1-oz slice of provolone cheese contains about 98 calories. A couple slices added to your sandwich adds a significant amount of both calories and fat. There are 4.8 grams of saturated fat in this serving size of provolone, contributing to a total fat of 7.4 grams.
