Magnesium and vitamin D are essential nutrients that your body needs to function. Vitamin D helps regulate calcium levels and build strong bones. Your muscles, heart, teeth and bones all require magnesium. Furthermore, magnesium is used to control the levels of vital minerals, such as copper, potassium, zinc and vitamin D. Deficiencies in either of these nutrients can lead to a variety of adverse effects.

If you develop magnesium deficiency, you may suffer from a multitude of neurological disorders. Anxiety, agitation, nervousness, sleep disorders and confusion are all serious symptoms of magnesium deficiency, the University of Maryland Medical Center reports. These neurological disorders point to deterioration of your brain and other nerves. In severe cases you may even suffer from life-threatening seizures. If this continues for a long period of time, your nerves may become permanently damaged.
Abnormal Heart Rhythms and Low Blood Pressure
Your heart and blood vessels need magnesium in order to properly regulate blood flow. Without magnesium, you can develop arrhythmia, or an abnormal heart rate, and a significant drop in blood pressure, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. By themselves these effects are precarious, but together they can cause serious complications. If you are already suffering from heart disease, the side effects may exacerbate your condition.
Vitamin D Resistance
One of the more important functions of magnesium aids in the proper absorption and utilization of vitamin D. In cases of severe magnesium deficiency, you may develop vitamin D resistance, according to an article in the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.” This means that even though you are taking in enough vitamin D, your body is unable to use it due to magnesium deficiency. Without vitamin D and magnesium, you will be unable to properly balance your calcium and phosphorus levels, which can lead to heart arrhythmia and muscle spasms.
Vitamin D deficiency often deteriorates bone strength and structure. In children this condition is called rickets; in adults it's termed osteomalacia. In children, vitamin D deficiency leads to abnormal growth of the long bones, which causes short stature and skeletal deformities. Osteomalacia in adults produces weak bones that are prone to fracture and dislocation. Either disease can be treated by vitamin D supplement treatment, but typically bone deformities are difficult to fix.
