Trotter 525 Cybex Treadmill Information

The Trotter 525 treadmill is an older model machine, first produced in 1994. It has since been discontinued. The 525 was considered a high-end treadmill, retailing at $4200. However, it was recalled twice before being discontinued. You cannot purchase this model new, but you may find used units online or at garage sales.

History

Between 1970 and 1979, Trotter treadmills were made in the basement of Edward Trotter, who built the first motorized treadmill in 1970. After expanding his business for the next four years, Trotter retired and sold his company to UM Holdings. Trotter merged with Cybex in 1997 to create the first worldwide, publicly owned company in the fitness equipment industry.

Identification

Trotter introduced its 500 series line of treadmills in 1992. The treadmills were designed for residential use. The Trotter 525 was considered a commercial quality treadmill in terms of its reliability, durability and features, which explains the high price tag.

Features

The Trotter 525 offered a large, easy-to-read console display. The deck was long and wide, providing a comfortable, sturdy running surface. The 525 was considered to be a smooth, rugged and solid treadmill with a large selection of options.

First Recall

In 2003, there were five reports of fire in Cybex/Trotter treadmills. Cybex voluntarily recalled six models, including the Trotter 525. The motor would overheat due to lack of regular maintenance, causing a fire hazard. No injuries were reported.

Second Recall

Cybex recalled the same treadmill models again in 2007. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, during the repairs associated with the first recall, wire nuts were installed improperly, causing the treadmills to overheat and posing a fire hazard. The Trotter 525 was included in this second recall. Cybex no longer produces treadmills under the Trotter brand name.
