Fitness centers offer group classes which allow the support and camaraderie of others as opposed to working out at home alone. In a group class, you are likely to encounter new friendship opportunities and serious motivation. These classes are equally beneficial in helping keep you accountable to yourself and others in your fitness program. A membership to a fitness center offers a wide variety of amenities and equipment, from saunas to weight rooms. Reaching your fitness goals is made easier by the convenience to chose from a plethora of gym equipment. Types of equipment include resistance machines such as leg press, leg curl, chest press, shoulder press and lat pull down. Free-weight equipment such as bench press, military press, cable cross-over and dumbbells are also available. Additional equipment includes medicine and stability balls and a variety of cardiovascular machines such as treadmills, ellipticals, rowers and steppers.

Regulations and Safety Standards

Fitness centers enforce strict etiquette to ensure members' safety and health. Check-in with ID cards limits admission to screened members. Dress codes keep it professional -- and lower the risk of injury due to use of improper clothing while working with equipment. Members or gym staff are required to disinfect exercise equipment after each use to prevent the spreading of bacteria and germs. Shower, sauna and locker rooms are sanitized to prevent the spread of germs. Certified trainers monitor workout rooms to be sure members are using machines properly and safely.
