Finding a gym you are comfortable working out in is a big step in meeting your fitness goals. All gyms give you access to a large collection of expensive equipment. The best gyms offer activities to suit the needs of each member through classes, personal training and even child care. Some facilities even cater to people with specific athletic goals or who enjoy a specific style of training.

Life Time Fitness

Life Time is stocked with many styles of weight machines: plate-loaded, cable, Free Motion and selectorized. Swimming lessons, fitness testing, and nutrition counselling are available as well. Amenities vary by club but may include tennis, an outdoor pool with water slide, rock climbing wall, and full-service spa. This chain has over 100 gym across America that offer around the clock access. (R1,3)

Equinox

Equinox, an international luxury chain, offers the best classes out of any big box gym according to "Fitness Magazine" (R2). Vinyasa yoga, cycling, and Pilates are among the standard classes offered. You will also find trendy classes taught here such as Barre Fit and Tabata. "Health Magazine" gave Equinox the number one spot on its list of America's Healthiest Gyms, citing its highly trained staff and the presence of a dozen types of cardio machines. (r1,3)

Anytime Fitness members can visit any of the club's over 2,400 locations at any time of day or night, all year round. Some clubs offer access to tanning beds as well. The gyms feature ample cardio and weight equipment, though people looking for classes will be disappointed. (R3)

LA Fitness offers members convenience; you can join online and avoid the hassle of a sales pitch. Each location is open 7 days a week and offers swimming, personal training and basketball or racquetball courts. Amenities like child care and 24-hour access vary depending on the club. (R3)

If you are caught up in the trend of functional fitness, The Institute of Human Performance in Boca Raton, FL, is the place to go. This award-winning facility not only employes highly-trained professionals, but is a global education hub for trainers. This indoor-outdoor facility offers more than just rows of cardio machines -- it's a playground of functional fitness gear to help you get in shape and perform your best in any athletic pursuit. Reebok CrossFit

While just four CrossFit box Affiliates in the United States share the Reebok name, these are four impressive gyms. "The Active Times" places the New York location in the top three of its 31 Best Gyms in America list. "The Active Times" was impressed by the gym's size -- 10,000 square feet hidden in the center of New York's 5th Avenue. (R3,4)

The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers

Jutting into the Hudson River in New York, the Sports Center at Chelsea Piers offers members the usual fitness classes and personal training. More impressively however are its sport specific zones. It boasts a full size boxing ring, sand volleyball court, a quarter-mile indoor track, 25-yard swimming pool, three basketball courts, and a rock climbing wall. This Woburn, MA, based gym attracts athletes from around the country. Owner Mike Boyle believes in whole-body, functional training.
