How to Apply Sweet Oil for Earaches

Anyone who has ever had a serious earache understands how the pain can reduce a grown man to tears and make a baby scream inconsolably through the night. However, it's good to know there are things you can do to relieve the pain almost instantly. Natural Home Remedies.org says that sweet oil is an old-time remedy used for centuries, and is still in use today as a highly regarded treatment for ear infections. Try using it for soothing relief next time you or your loved ones have an earache.

Step 1

Buy sweet oil at the pharmacy. It is unrefined and comes in small bottles to be used for medicinal purposes. Because sweet oil from the pharmacy is unrefined, it cannot be used for cooking. Or you can use the best olive oil you can find, according to Natural Home Remedies.org, which can be used for medicinal purposes as well as for cooking.

Step 2

Purchase the highest quality organic, extra virgin olive oil at the local health food store if you decide to go this route rather than buying at the pharmacy. Keep it in a cool, dry cabinet to avoid spoilage.

Step 3

Buy a small glass dropper bottle, preferably brown, blue or dark green rather than one in clear glass. The dark color of the bottle helps to preserve the nutrients and medicinal qualities of the oil. Separate the bottle and dropper and boil both in water for 10 minutes to sterilize, allowing it to air dry before using.

Step 4

Fill the sterile dropper bottle with sweet or olive oil, close it and warm in a pan of warm water until it reaches body temperature. Test the oil temperature on the inside of your wrist to be sure it's not too hot.

Step 5

Place 2-4 drops of the warmed oil in the affected ear, lying with that ear upward to allow the oil to penetrate. Olive oil has natural antiseptic properties, explains Jethro Kloss in his book "Back to Eden," and helps to relieve ear infections and other kinds of earaches almost immediately.

Step 6

Tuck a small piece of cotton into the outer portion of the ear to keep the oil from running out. Remain lying down for 10-15 minutes with the head turned so the affected ear faces upward to allow the oil to continue to do its job soothing away the pain.

Step 7

Repeat the above steps as necessary until the earache has resolved.

Things You'll Need

  • Sweet oil or organic extra virgin olive oil

  • Cotton balls

  • Dark-colored glass dropper bottle

  • Heating pad

Tip

Apply a warm compress or heating pad set on low to the ear after filling with cotton to keep the oil warm and add soothing heat to the ear. Do not sleep with a heating pad turned on.

Warning

If after several treatments the ear infection does not resolve or becomes worse, contact your doctor.

Never place liquids in an ear where you suspect the eardrum may be broken or ruptured.
