Concerta, also known as methylphenidate, is a medication used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD), according to It is available in tablet form and can be taken with or without food. Do not use Concerta if you suffer from such medical conditions as severe hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (chest pain) or problems with your heart rhythm. According to, Concerta's side effects may be so hazardous that immediate medical help is needed. Dangerous side effects include tachycardia (fast heartbeat), an arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat), fever, skin rash and severe hypertension. Concerta can also lead to a headache and bruising.

Psychological Side Effects

According to the Internet Drug Index, Concerta can affect your state of mind and lead to anger, mood swings and tearfulness. Trouble sleeping and hypervigilance (checking your environment for threats) are also psychological side effects. You may also develop hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't present), delusional thinking (inability to distinguish fantasy from reality) and aggression. Call your doctor if you experience these psychological symptoms.

Mild Side Effects

According to, Concerta may cause less-serious side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, sweating and weight loss. Users may also experience stomach pain, vision problems and nervousness.

Allergic Reaction

In some instances, you may be allergic to Concerta's ingredients. If this is the case, you may develop difficulty breathing. Swelling of your face, throat and lips can also occur. Concerta can also lead to itchy red and inflamed bumps on your skin. Go to your local emergency center to prevent these potentially life-threatening symptoms from progressing.

Gastrointestinal Obstruction
