The size of a soccer field varies depending on how many people are playing, whether the people are adults or children and whether you're following international or U.S. dimensions guidelines. While there's no one size for a soccer field, all the fields contain similar markings, such as the center circle and goal boxes.

When playing soccer through some structured, nationwide programs such as those provided by the U.S. Adult Soccer Association, you'll find field sizes that follow international guidelines. These are some of the largest regulation sizes, often 70 by 120 yards. Other groups such as the U.S. Soccer Federation follow international guidelines but make exceptions for groups such as youth players, players older than 35 and those with disabilities; these groups are allowed a variety of approved size options.

With recreational soccer in the U.S., fields for adult play usually are 60 by 100 yards. Team size can affect field size as well. For example, if you are playing teams of four instead of the standard 11, you might need a field that is 30 by 50 yards. Youth soccer uses smaller fields to make the game more enjoyable for kids. A field designed for 10-year-olds might be 40 by 60 yards, while one for 6-year-olds could be 15 by 30 yards, according to U.S. Youth Soccer.

Goal Sizes

Goal sizes change to accommodate field size in many cases. For the smaller fields designed for children, the goal might be 4 1/2 feet high and 9 feet wide. Older children might use a goal of 6 1/2 by 18 1/2 feet, while adults on the larger fields use the standard 8-by-24-feet goal.
