Sweet, tender yams aren't just for Thanksgiving. You don't need a large family gathering to enjoy them; they cook up in minutes with minimal preparation on your grill. Grilled yams make the perfect accompaniment to pork chops, steaks or grilled salmon. There are over 200 species of yam, from the orange yams we are familiar with to yams with pale white flesh or even dark purple flesh. No matter which variety you find at your local farmer's market or grocery store, you can make it into a healthy and delicious grilled treat.

Step 1

Preheat your grill to medium-high, or 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2

Peel the yams with your paring knife, and trim off the ends and any bad spots.

Step 3

Slice your yams horizontally into 1/2-inch thick rounds.

Step 4

Brush your yam slices generously with olive oil. The oil prevents the yams from sticking to the grill.

Step 5

Cook your yam slices for 10 to 12 minutes on each side. When they are done, you will be able to insert your fork easily into the center of each yam slice.

Step 6

Remove your yams from the grill, and immediately add salt and pepper to taste.
