A cooked pig foot is considered a foundation of a delicious meal around world, especially in the southern states of the U.S. Recipes such as pickled pig feet are among the favorite methods of serving this bizarre meal. However, regardless of the recipe, you must first cook the pig feet by boiling them in water.

Cooking the Pig Feet - The Basics
Turn the stove on High.
Wash the pig feet with warm water. This will remove any debris that may have been missed by the butcher.
Split the skin of the pig feet between the toes. This will allow the pig feet to cook evenly through.
Fill a large pot with water and place it on the stove. If you wish, you can add herbs, vegetables and spices to the water in order to add flavor to the pig feet. This could include lemons, onions, rosemary, fennel and bay leaves, or any other mix of herbs and flavorings that suit your taste.
Place the cleaned pig feet into the pot. Make sure the water covers the feet completely.
Cover the pot with a lid.
Bring the water to a boil and then reduce the heat. Simmer the pig feet until they are tender. This usually takes at least six hours. Use a fork to test for tenderness. If the fork easily can penetrate the pig feet, then they are done.
Remove the pig feet from the pot and discard the water.
Decide how you would like to finish the pig feet. Although you can serve the pig feet as-is, there are also other options. For instance, you can pickle the pig feet or you can barbecue them.
