QuickVue One-Step hCG is an early pregnancy test that uses urine to detect a pregnancy, while the QuickVue hCG combo test can use a urine or blood sample. Unlike many pregnancy tests, QuickVue is a cassette-type test, as opposed to a midstream, dipstick test. This test is used in clinics, offices and other professional settings when a pregnancy test is required. You won’t find QuickVue pregnancy tests in your local drugstore or supermarket since they are frequently sold by the case.

How it Works
Pregnancy tests, including the QuickVue hCG tests, detect the presence of the human chorionic gonadotropin hormone in the blood. When conception occurs and the egg implants into the lining of the uterus, this hormone is released. It can be detected in the blood first and once enough of it is in the bloodstream, it spills over into the urine.
Some pregnancy tests are more sensitive than others. The QuickVue One-Step hCG combo test has a published sensitivity rating of 10 mIU/mL when a blood sample is used and 20 mIU/mL when a urine sample is used. The QuickVue One-Step urine-only test is slightly less sensitive at 25 mIU/mL. The lower the number, the more sensitive the test is because it can detect less of the hormone for a positive result. For this reason, false negatives occur frequently when women test too early to detect the hormone.
Instructions for Use
Both QuickVue tests are used in a similar fashion. When you go to your doctor’s office, a blood or urine sample will be taken to test for pregnancy. The nurse or lab personnel will place three to four drops of blood or urine into the testing well of the cassette. After three to five minutes, the results will appear in the testing window. If the test is positive and you are pregnant, a plus sign will appear. If the test is negative, a minus sign will display. If the test is negative, your doctor might repeat the test in several days.
QuickVue pregnancy tests are considered to be very accurate, with a 99 percent accuracy rating. For the most accurate results, the test should be performed exactly as the instructions state and the results should be read within the specified time limit.
