Twinlab started manufacturing liquid protein supplements in 1968. Since then, the company has extended its line of products to include teas, herbs, vitamins and minerals. Among its offerings, you find the Twinlab Amino Fuel Liquid and Amino Fuel Tablets. The formulas combine amino acids, carbohydrates and the B-complex vitamins. Side effects are associated with this type of dietary supplement. Consult your doctor before taking either product.

Amino Acid Side Effects
According to Drugs.com, amino acid supplements do not generally pose a risk unless your immune system rejects one or more components in the Twinlab formula. If that happens, you are likely to experience an allergic reaction that can range from mild to life threatening. Stop taking the supplement and get immediate medical attention if you develop a rash, hives or itching. Problems breathing and swelling above the neck are also serious reactions that require urgent care.
Specific amino acids can also cause side effects if you have certain conditions. Phenylalanine, for instance, is in the Amino Fuel formula. If you suffer from phenylketonuria, you should not take this product. Phenylketonuria is the body’s inability to break down the amino acid phenylalanine, resulting in mental and growth retardation in children and neurological problems.
B Complex Side Effects
Gout, high glucose and skin problems are reactions that can occur after you take vitamin B supplements, says the American Cancer Society. The risk increases if you take more than the recommended daily dosage for the Twinlab Amino Fuel. Excess folate, which is in the formula, interferes with the therapeutic properties of methotrexate, a chemotherapy drug. Too much niacin causes vision and stomach problems.
The Twinlab Amino Fuel supplements come with several warnings from the manufacturer. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not use either the liquid or tablets. The formula is not designed for individuals younger than 18 years of age. Share with your doctor your complete medical history and list of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, herbs and other supplements you take. There might be a known interaction between them and the components of the Twinlab product.
When you discuss taking Amino Fuel with your doctor, ask her much you should have daily to minimize the risk of side effects. She may recommend you follow the dosage listed on the manufacturer’s label. Twinlab suggests you take three tablespoons of the liquid formula with meals or between meals. You can also time your doses for just before or just after you exercise. If you prefer the pills, crush two to four tablets of Amino Fuel 2000 daily and swallow the powder with each meal and with at least 8 ounces of water. Take four tablets of Amino Fuel 1000 with each meal daily. Crush them and swallow the powder with one or more glasses of water.
