In martial arts, one-step techniques simulate an attack on the practitioner to allow him to demonstrate mastery of the techniques being taught. They are performed by having one student step forward in an exaggerated step – often with the right leg - and throw a reverse punch with the right hand. This allows you to demonstrate your technique on a stationary target. You will then counter the attack using blocks, kicks and punches. One-steps are often used during rank testing to allow the judges to observe the timing and technique of the student.
Video of the Day
This is an example of a one-step technique that could be for a beginning student. Step forward at about a 45 degree angle with your right foot and block the punch with an inside-out forearm block with your left hand. At the same time throw a punch with your right hand to the attacker’s face.
For a person testing for their green belt, the judges would like to see a kick or two performed. Step out at a 45 degree angle with your left leg and block the punch using an outer forearm block with your right arm. Lift your right leg and throw a roundhouse kick to the attacker’s face. Sit your foot down while at the same time punching your attacker in the face with your right hand and the body with your left hand. Try to land both punches before your right leg touches the floor.
For the red and brown belt levels, the judges are looking for timing, technique and more advanced kicks. Step out with your left leg as the attacker punches while simultaneously blocking and grabbing their punch with your right arm. Throw a right-leg side kick into the attacker’s ribs while using your arm to force their punching arm down. Place your right leg close to your left foot when setting your foot down, turn and throw a left-leg spinning thrust kick to your attacker’s solar plexus.
Judges are looking for spinning and jumping techniques at this level. Use a simultaneous outer forearm block with your left arm and punch the attacker in the face with your right hand. Follow this up with a left-leg roundhouse kick to your attacker’s ribs and sit your foot down close to your right foot. Jump straight up in the air and spin around to deliver a jump spinning hook kick to your attacker’s head.
