Consuming too much sodium is bad, especially for babies. A baby's kidneys can't process excess sodium efficiently. According to WASH -- World Action on Salt & Health -- high sodium levels in children contributes to high blood pressure, osteoporosis, obesity and asthma. An infant up to age 6 months needs no more than 0.4 grams of sodium per day, while a baby age 6 to 12 months requires no more than 0.8 grams per day.

You can minimize your baby's salt intake in several ways. First, breastfeed exclusively until your baby is 4 to 6 months, then gradually start introducing solids while continuing to breastfeed. Try to keep up the breastfeeding until your baby is at least 12 months old. Select solid foods designed for infants, because they have lower sodium levels. Read labels to monitor sodium levels in prepackaged foods, and don't add salt when preparing your baby's food.
