Healthy joints require a nutritious diet and appropriate exercise; however, even if you treat your joints well there is still the chance that an injury or normal wear and tear could cause joint problems. Treatments such as prescription medications and supplements may help. Eggshell membranes may provide a faster and safer alternative to other products taken to decrease joint pain and inflammation. Ask your doctor before taking any supplements or changing your diet.

Eggshell membranes contain substances with known benefits to joint health, including glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, chondroitin and collagen, according to an article published on the Insider Health website in February 2011. As you age, your body is less able to make glucosamine, which decreases joint inflammation, cushions joints against impact and assists with cartilage repair. Hyaluronic acid also helps to absorb shock and promotes joint elasticity. Chondroitin promotes cartilage elasticity and fights enzymes that damage joints. Collagen is a protein found in connective tissue.


Approximately 140 million adults in the United States may have a joint or connective tissue disorder, according to an article published in the "Journal of Clinical Interventions in Aging" in 2009. These include arthritis, gout, neck and back pain. Eggshell membranes may be effective for reducing pain associated with joint and connective tissue disorders. The article examined two open-label human pilot studies. Results showed that taking 500 milligrams of natural eggshell membrane supplements once a day significantly decreased joint pain. Participants experienced pain reduction both as early as seven days and increasingly over 30 days.


Eggshell membranes may be beneficial for symptoms associated with knee osteoarthritis, according to an article published in "Clinical Rheumatology" in August 2009. Osteoarthritis is caused by wear and tear on the joints. It is the most prevalent type of arthritis, affecting an estimated 27 million adults in the United States. The study found that natural eggshell membrane supplements are effective for reducing pain and stiffness in the knee from osteoarthritis; also, researchers stated that eggshell membrane supplements are safe and do not cause the side effects typical of long-term use of osteoarthritis treatments, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.


Egg shell membrane supplements may not be right for you if you are allergic to eggs. Eggs are a common food allergen for infants and children, according to the Mayo Clinic website. Some adults do not outgrow this allergy. Reactions to eating eggs varies; the most common reaction is hives. Other reactions include nasal inflammation, cramps, nausea, chest tightness, coughing and shortness of breath. It is also possible that you could experience anaphylaxis, a potentially fatal allergic reaction. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include constriction of your airways that makes breathing difficult, abdominal pain, rapid heart rate and shock.
