Don’t Let a Step Back Derail You from Your Goals


January has come and gone, but hopefully the same hasn't happened to your New Year's resolutions. Many of us start off the year with great intentions of making nutritional changes, but as the year goes by, stress, work, and old habits start creeping back in and resolutions take the back burner.

It does not have to be that way. I tell my clients all the time, "life happens," and sometimes it does get in the way of your goals. But how you deal with life and stress shows your true character. Just because you might have had a set back does not mean you have to give up. Here is a great analogy I tell my clients whenever they have a moment of weakness:

Weight loss is like climbing a flight of stairs. You start on the ground floor and look up. It looks awesome at the top. Your awesome, healthy body is on the top step, and you know you want to get there. You start climbing those stairs step by step, losing one pound at a time. At first you move fast because you are so excited and weight comes off quickly. But then, your heart rate picks up and your pace diminishes and the weight loss slows down. Your mind gets active and your eyes start to wander away from that top step. You slip and fall. Slipping on the stairs is like having a bad day of eating. So, what should you do? When you fall down, pick yourself up right away and move forward. Instead of thinking that you'll have to start over tomorrow, tell yourself that your next meal will be better.


The reality is that you are trying to lose weight to live a happier and healthier life. So if you go all the way back to the bottom of the stairs, you are going to have to start over again at some point. Just accept a step back (or that bad day of food) as a stumble, nothing more.

You don't have to be perfect to reach your weight loss goals. You just have to be on track with your healthy eating more than you are off track. Make 2014 the year you don't give up. That's the best New Year's resolution you can make.

Push forward. Look up. And reach those goals!
