Safe, Strong and Sexy

It wasn't long ago that I was leading a pretty unhealthy lifestyle, although it feels like a lifetime ago. I was living in New York City post-college and bartending until 4 a.m. on the weekends in smoke-filled nightclubs after working a full week. I ate out almost every meal and my favorites included pizza, pasta, Chinese takeout, and an occasional steak all washed down with lots of booze and a cigarette.

In 2000, my life took a turn for the better. I found Hapkido, a Korean style martial art that focuses on self-defense. I quickly became hooked on all of the benefits it was bringing to my mind, body and spirit. My body was transforming from flabby to fit, I felt more confident and had increased awareness. I began cleaning up my diet and traded in vodka shots for wheatgrass shots and cigarettes for swords. All I wanted to do was train, train, and train some more.

My wish was granted when 9/11 left me jobless. This blessing in disguise led me to pursue my NASM personal training certification and build a private training practice, including my Hapkido skills. Simultaneously, I trained hard almost every day and learned more about what foods would fuel me best. I enrolled at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to learn a holistic approach to health and graduated as a health coach in 2005.  Constantly hungry for more knowledge, I later tackled a Masters degree and graduated in 2009 as a clinical nutritionist. By this time I tested and passed my third degree black belt test all before heading to the west coast for a sunnier lifestyle.

My health journey will be ongoing but over the last 12 years. I have learned secrets, shortcuts, and methods to a healthier lifestyle that I love sharing with my clients and readers. Helping others to stay strong, safe while still feeling sexy is my lifelong mission. Here are three major topics that you can expect from my blogs:

True strength encompasses the mind, body and spirit. By feeding your body with the right mix of clean, whole foods you will strengthen your immune system to be able to fight off disease. By feeding your body with the right exercise you can strengthen your muscles to fight off fat and even fatigue. Finding the right lifestyle practices to feed your mind and nourish your soul are equally important to staying strong.

We live in a crazy world that is always surprising us with unexpected violence. Whether you live in a small town or a big city, practicing awareness is key to living safely. I created the Stilettos and Self Defense video series after having a run-in with an attacker and was able to scare him off. Learning about safety is something I believe in for all individuals.

Sexy is a state of mind. Sexy can mean feeling fun, confident or powerful. It means having a balanced life of fun, joy, discipline and health. It means overcoming obstacles in life and enjoying the process. And, yes, it means looking and feeling great too, whatever that means for you.
