The Virgin Diet and 7 Foods That May Be Hurting You

Hi there. I'm JJ Virgin.

Yes, that really is my name. (Well, JJ is my nickname!)  I am a nutrition and fitness expert and a 30-year (wow, when did that happen) veteran of the industry. I am also a perennial student, with 40 grad and doctoral courses in nutrition, exercise physiology, functional medicine, and psychology under my belt. You'll find me continuing my education via the numerous conferences I attend every year.

Obviously I love this field, and my desire to help others always pushes me to acquire new knowledge.

My area of expertise involves overcoming weight loss resistance. If you feel like you're doing everything right yet your weight just won't budge, you probably struggle with weight loss resistance.

I discovered early on that the outdated, overly simplistic calories-in, calories-out bank account model of weight loss didn't work for many clients. Eventually I coined the phrase, "Your body isn't a bank account, it's a chemistry lab." (Not to mention a history book.) I began observing the numerous reasons my clients couldn't lose weight, despite their adamant efforts.

Along the way I discovered 7 foods that can literally hold your health hostage by creating chronic inflammation leading to fatigue, joint pain, gas, bloating, and cravings for the very foods that are hurting you.

Even worse, these foods are often the "healthy" ones you include in your diet.

So, what are those 7 foods? Soy, gluten, dairy, eggs, peanuts, corn, and sugar/ artificial sweeteners. If you’ve read The Virgin Diet, you know why these foods can be (and often are) unhealthy. If not, don’t worry: I will discuss each of these foods in-depth for future blogs.

I know. You’re probably thinking but what about whole grain goodness or that your best friend swears by soy milk for better skin. You’ve read that eggs are nature’s perfect food and that dairy builds strong bones.

The deal is, these foods may not be healthy for you.  You may be trying hard but not seeing results because you are following the wrong set of rules.

That's where The Virgin Diet can help.  I like to say The Virgin Diet is agnostic. Whether you consider your diet Paleo, vegan, or somewhere in between, The Virgin Diet can help you uncover the hidden food intolerances that can be creating weight loss resistance.

By completely removing these 7 foods for 3 weeks, then challenging the top high food intolerance (HiFI) culprits over the next 4 weeks, you can create a customized plan that will help you lose fat fast and keep it off forever.

Many clients come to The Virgin Diet for fast fat loss but stay because they look and feel so much better.

Everything I do was put to the test last September when my 16-year-old son Grant became the victim of a hit-and-run while out walking, He was run down by a car going 40 miles per hour and left for dead in the road.

We airlifted Grant to the local hospital, where doctors told us there was nothing they could do. If we airlifted him again to a hospital that could do aortic repair that he needed, he had a less than 1% (actually .25%) chance of even surviving, much less ever waking up or being normal.

Grant went through 3 weeks of ICU, 2 months in a trauma center, and he's now at a rehab center. One hundred days after this nightmare occurred, my son is walking, working out, and laughing. He is on track for a miraculous 100% (I like to think 110%) recovery.

During this process, I realized how much bigger The Virgin Diet is than I could have ever imagined.   The night of the accident, at midnight, we went against medical advice and made the decision to fight and save Grant's life. I spent 12-15 hours every day for weeks in the ICU. (So sterilized that if you are sick, you can't visit.)

Of the 100 days he has been in the hospital, I have been there at least 75, averaging 10-12 hours a day, while launching my New York Times bestselling book, The Virgin Diet, a PBS special based on the book, and doing some expert work on several television shows.

I couldn't have possibly done this if I wasn't in extremely good health. It has been a serious marathon, and I always joke that I hate endurance training. (I far prefer burst style sprint training!) I've had to be healthy, energetic, focused, and present during all of it.

Staying strong through Grant's traumatic situation made me realize how much bigger and more crucial it is that we put our health first so that when a big opportunity or a big challenge presents itself, we are ready to take it on!

In this blog I will share my winning strategies I've used with my clients for years.  I'll show you how to stay lean, healthy, and feeling your best no matter how hectic your life gets. (As I've learned these past few months, we're at our best when we're most challenged!) I will also be answering your questions. I look forward to interacting and receiving feedback from you.
