Livestrong's October 2017 Before & After!

Are you ready for cool Fall days, a little October spooktacular, a new bounce in your step and your healthy self? Whether you did it because you knew your fit self was in there ready for that 5k, tough mudder, you are ready for your fab you new year, you were tired of being tired after climbing stairs, or for any other reason - we would love to hear your story! Would you like to WIN $$$ for your story?

Enter LIVESTRONG.COM's October 2017 "Before & After" contest for a chance to win a $250 VISA gift card. Some of the things we would love to hear about your transformation include how much weight you lost, some of the fitness and nutritional changes you made, obstacles you overcame, what you are most proud of looking back - we really want to know what inspired you to make this transformation!

    • In the oldest picture (bottom left), I had been struggling with life. I was depressed and would barely leave my room. For so long i struggled with who I was and just life in general, I'd completely fallen apart. So when I took that pictureI was determined to be healthy and lose that weight so i took the picture and emailed it to myself to look back on. Couple days or weeks in I inevitably quit and went under my lonely little rock. I struggled for quite some time with suicidal thoughts and feelings. 3 years later, I decided I was going to do it for real. And i did. It's been 3 months and I've stuck with it. As of today I've lost 32 pounds, went down 4 pants sizes, went from a size xxl mens t-shirt to a medium womens. I've stopped hiding myself and started loving myself no matter what the scale says, I listen to my body and understand it. I'm the complete opposite of that girl in the bottom right and I've completely turning my life around. I'm happy

      My weight loss journey began three and a half years ago when I was coming out of a failed marriage. I was unhappy with my life and unhealthy. My cholesterol had hit 350, I weighed in at 224 lbs and I was wearing size 16. I became more active, going hiking and camping, but my weight remained high, along with my cholesterol. Two years ago, my doctor put me on a low carb diet to try to bring my cholesterol down. I'm now down to 154 lbs, 219 cholesterol and 7/8. I have now lost the weight I wanted to lose and I am using this app to track my maintenance. Below, June 2014 and now!

    • Hi Everyone! In the picture on the left I was at my heaviest, 261. I still can't believe I allowed myself to gain so much being that I am only standing at 5 feet tall so every pound shows on me. At the beginning of April right before my birthday I decided I had to make a change, not for anyone but myself. Through mostly nutrition changes I have been able to lose 54 lbs, now standing at 207. I have so much further to go and this is only the beginning! We can all be successful in this if we just keep looking forward!

    • Started at 270, currently at 220, goal weight is within my grasp!

      270 was a terrible place to be for sure. On my frame, it meant that I was extremely low energy, unable to play with my kids how I wanted, and I was setting a poor example. On top of that, I ended up on blood pressure medication with the possibility of cholesterol meds as well. Pills are my least favorite thing.

      Fast forward 4 months and I'm a full and even 50 pounds lighter and feeling great. I've kicked my medications to the curb, and I'm setting a great example for how to eat and exercise. I'm now sure that my kids will be set with their healthy habits and my wife won't be worried how long I'll be around for.

      Hi everyone,

      It all started last year in June 2016: I had just graduated with a PhD at Washington University in St. Louis, and a friend convinced me to go the gym with him to try working with a personal trainer. I was not a little worried at first because I hadn't been to a gym for many years but I decided to try it anyway and I never regretted it. In the past 17 months, I lost 115 lbs. I started at 287 lbs (~39% body fat) in June 2016 and this October I currently reached 172 lbs (~17% body fat).

      Given the financial and schedule commitment, my personal trainer sessions forced me to maintain a regular weekly workout routine and not find excuses to skip the gym. My personal trainer also gave me valuable nutrition advices and suggested me to start using a calorie monitor app, such as MyPlate.

      I used the MyPlate app daily to record all my calories input for about twelve months, first trying to limit myself to 1,500 calories per day (for the first 6 months) then 1,200 calories per day for the following 6 months. Nowadays, I mostly focusing on limiting my carbohydrate intake to about 20 net grams (or less) of carbs per day for 4-5 days per week. During this past 17 months, I never tried to actually follow a strict diet. I was still eating everything that I typically like eating but I focused on reducing my portion sizes and, thanks to the MyPlate app, I was able easily control my daily calories, fat, protein and carbs intakes.

    • Mini goals = long term success/happiness

      In October 2016 (181 pounds) I took my kids to a theme park and had a wake-up call when I realized I couldn't keep up with them and had to keep sitting down to rest. At that moment, I was inspired to change. I wasn't very optimistic as I've struggled with weight for over 10 years; trying fad diets and pills that promised a quick weight loss. Nothing worked for me and all the weight quickly came right back.

      I was so out of shape that any exercise was extremely challenging and my eating habits were far from healthy.

      I decided to start with mini goals; walk 10 min without resting, try a new work out video, make a healthy recipe, drink 10 cups of water, get 8 hours of sleep (just to name a few). These small goals changed my life. I never felt discouraged or had that feeling of failure because I had attainable goals that I wanted to meet. These have transformed me into a happier and healthier me! I have completed a 5K, learned hip hop, and can run around to keep up with my kids. I went from having a kitchen full of unhealthy foods to being stocked with fruits and vegetables, which I'm proud to say my kids ask for daily. I've also been able to lose over 30 pounds and keep it off. At 150 pounds, I'm still working on mini goals and am excited to see what year #2 brings!
