How to Quit Drinking

I have been trying to lose weight for a while now, and the main cause of me not being able to is the empty calories I consume every day from beer. I have not always drank a lot, but have really stepped it up over the past two years. I currently drink anywhere from 8-15 beers a day. I actually do believe I could stop right now, and would have by now but the problem that makes me keep relapsing is that I read it is unsafe to stop drinking cold turkey and you could die from it. So, I have been slowly tampering myself off of it, but one day I will have more than I was supposed to. Any truth to it being unsafe to stop cold turkey? Any tips on how to tamper myself off it without relapsing?
