My Success Story is:

I have achieved what I always wanted but never thought was possible for a person like me. I am 41 years old and I am in the best shape of my life. In January 2010 I went to the doctor and got a pretty good scare. I was not in good health. I had high cholesterol, high triglycerides and a fatty liver due to my obesity. It was at that point I decided to make a change. With the help of a strict fast for Greek Orthodox Lent I was able to start losing weight pretty quickly and in April when I started exercising it started to come off even quicker. By September 2010, at 40 years old, I qualified for premier life insurance rates. I sell insurance and can tell you that only a small percentage of 40- year-old males qualify for premier life insurance rates. I had turned around my health and fitness in only 10 months. Today I weigh 172 lbs and still exercise almost every day (sometimes twice a day) and I am feeling and looking great.

I thought that if i did not do something to turn things around I might not be around for the big events in their lives.

My Turning Point was:

When I went to the doctor and weighed in at almost 240 lbs I could not believe it. I was feeling bad was out of breath all the time and just had a generally bad feeling. I no longer had control over my life or my body. I was also turning 40 that year and had 2 small children. I thought that if i did not do something to turn things around I might no be around for the big events in their lives.

My Support System Was:

My wife and children are tremendous supporters and motivators. But to be honest, my biggest supporter was myself. And I think that's important aspect of turning a goal into a reality.

I now realize that you don't need a gym membership to get in really good shape.

My biggest challenge on the road to success was:

In the beginning, getting up at 5:30am to go to the gym was my biggest challange. It was a shock to my system, but a change that was needed. However, I now realize that you don't need a gym membership to get in really good shape. But you still need to overcome some obstacle that didn't exist when you were inactive.

My secret to success that I hope to share with others is

One word: Perseverance. You need to keep going even when every fiber in your being is telling you to quit. The biggest part of losing weight is mental toughness and the belief that you can change. Once you have the belief, then you have to surround yourself with information that will make that thought a reality. Reading the LIVESTRONG.COM articles has really helped in my transformation. When ever I have a question I need answered or need to find out how many calories are in a certain food I always come to LIVERSTRONG.COM first for the best info. It gives me the answers I need and keeps me motivated on my journey.
