I'm Kacy Grossman. Today, I'll be answering the question, are antioxidants supplements harmful. What are antioxidants? Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, which are formed naturally in the body or can be caused by pollution or alcohol consumption. Antioxidants are found in whole fruits and vegetables. They can also be found in larger amounts than fruits and vegetables in supplements. People with high intake of fruits and vegetables in their diets have been found by multiple studies to have lower risks of certain diseases. Studies have shown that people with a high intake of fruit and vegetables are at a decreased risk for certain disease. However, studies on the supplementation with antioxidants have not found that there's a decreased risk for certain diseases. Studies on the supplementation of beta carotene, which is a precursor to vitamin A have found that vitamin A actually increases the risk of lung cancer in smokers. Studies on the effect of vitamin E supplementation have also found a potential increased risk for cancer. Supplementation with antioxidants can also interfere with certain medications. So it's best probably to get your antioxidants from fruits and vegetables.
