Women may wish to stop a period if it is unusually heavy or prolonged, or for various other reasons. Although no over-the-counter (OTC) methods can completely stop a menstrual period, some medicinal herbs may temporarily stop or slow the release of menstrual fluid from the uterus. Consult your health care provider before combining any of these herbs with OTC or prescription drugs, including oral contraceptives. Schedule an appointment with your primary care provider as soon as possible if you experience significant blood loss or a period lasting longer than 8 days.
Shepherd's Purse
Historic herbalist Maude Grieve described shepherd's purse as a valuable treatment for miscarriage, postpartum hemorrhage and heavy menstrual bleeding. This herb, commonly consumed as a table vegetable in its native range, may help to slow or temporarily stop menstruation. It works by constricting blood flow to the pelvis and facilitating platelet activity.
Crampbark
The health information website Drugs.com notes crampbark's extensive traditional use as a treatment for heavy menstruation. While no peer-reviewed human studies have evaluated its efficacy, it appears to work by relaxing the tissues in the uterus. In addition to slowing menstrual flow, this action also reduces spasmodic pain related to menstruation. A typical dose may involve 3 to 4g of dried bark, taken by mouth.
Chasteberry
Chasteberry may help to stop or slow menstruation by addressing underlying hormonal imbalances. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine notes that chasteberry is traditionally used to treat menstrual problems, including irregularity and premenstrual syndrome. In theory, chasteberry may help to prevent the fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone that cause prolonged periods. However, no human studies have confirmed its effectiveness.
