There is a major misunderstanding among the general population as to when to use heat therapy v.s. cold therapy in the treatment of soft tissue injuries.
Heat therapy is good for sore, tight muscles whether the muscles have been previously injured or just over worked. However, in an active soft tissue injury, application of heat can actually increase the severity of the injury and delay healing.
Cold therapy and compression are essential to be used UNTIL the pain and inflammation (swelling) have subsided.
Heat draws circulation to the heated area and if it is applied to torn tissue causes more swelling and an increase of leakage into the surrounding area. The body would then have to deal with the subsequent death of otherwise healthy cell as well as remove the waste fluid.
Cold compression therapy does just the opposite in that it halts the leakage while the tear heals; usually through the 4th or 5th day following the injury. Subsequent lack of resting the injury properly can result in pain from movement which indicates re-injury and a delay in healing.
Once the pain and inflammation are in check, then heat can be applied; just not too soon.
