Losing your voice results from a condition known as laryngitis. This occurs when your larynx---or voice box---becomes swollen or irritated, according to MedlinePlus. This can be caused by a number of factors, including allergies, a cold, flu, exposure to chemicals, an upper respiratory infection or other inflammation-causing conditions. While not typically painful, losing your voice can be an inconvenience.

Honey and Lemon Gargle

Gargling a warm solution of lemon and honey can reduce inflammation and irritation of the larynx. Squeeze half a lemon into a cup or bowl. Gradually add honey, ceasing when you have created a solution that still flows freely---you can add the other half of the lemon juice if you have put in too much honey. Pour this solution into your mouth and tilt your head slightly back, holding the solution at the back of your throat, yet not drinking it. Make an "aaaaaaaahhhhhh" sound with your throat to swish the solution back and forth. Repeat this several times, then spit the mixture out. Repeat as often as needed. MotherNature.com warns against gargling too forcefully because this can damage the vocal cords. Instead, do this more gently and refrain from overdoing the gargling sound.

Hot Tea

A number of herbal tea remedies make soothing drinks for your aching throat and voice box. The tea needs to be hot enough to warm the throat, but not so hot that it burns it. Health911.com says that while most teas are beneficial, teas made from fenugreek, eucalyptus, horehound or marshmallow may also be useful to gargle with.

At-Home Humidifier

Instead of using a humidifier, make your own using steaming hot water that has been poured into a bowl. Hold your head over this bowl and open your mouth to inhale the steam. Perform this for five minutes so the steam can sufficiently reach your larynx. MotherNature.com recommends repeating this treatment anywhere from two to four times per day to experience the best results.
