Volumizing shampoos that contain typical styling product ingredients can make your hair look temporarily thicker and bouncier, says Paula Begoun, hair product expert and author of the book "Don't Go Shopping For Hair-Care Products Without Me," on CBS's "The Early Show." Begoun says volumizing shampoos can build up on your hair if you overuse them, so you shouldn't wash with volumizing shampoo every day.

Wheat Protein

Wheat protein can bind to your hair shaft and pump it up to almost double its usual size, says Lisa Chiccine of the Lisa Chiccine Salon in New York City in Good Housekeeping magazine. Sunsilk Anti-Flat Shampoo and Rice & Wheat Volumizing Shampoo both contain volume-boosting wheat protein, according to Good Housekeeping.

Polyquaternarium-10

Pumped-up hair shafts can make your hair too smooth to style, so O, The Oprah Magazine recommends choosing a volumizing shampoo that contains polyquaternarium-10. This compound adds texture to your hair so that it's not as slippery and easier to style in its volumized condition.

Peppermint

If you want to achieve volume with lift at the roots, opt for a volumizing shampoo that contains peppermint, recommends Daily Beauty, a blog produced by NewBeauty magazine. Because peppermint has a stimulating effect on your scalp, it makes your hair follicles stick straight up, creating volume.

Niacin

Volumizing shampoos that contain niacin, a B vitamin also known as vitamin B-3, can adhere to your hair shaft, making your hair look visibly fuller, says Good Housekeeping magazine. Because it's a type of protein, it thickens your hair without making it stiff.

Citric Acid

If you use a lot of styling products on your hair, product residue can weigh down your locks, making them look limp and flat. Boost your hair's bounce factor by opting for a volumizing shampoo that contains an alpha hydroxy acid like citric acid--it can help to remove product build-up from your hair, according to O, The Oprah Magazine.

Lightweight Moisturizers

Because volumizing shampoos can be drying, you may want to consider a shampoo that moisturizes your hair while it boosts volume. If you do, look for one that contains lightweight moisturizers like panthenol and vitamin E, recommends O, The Oprah Magazine. Heavier moisturizers will add weight to your hair and counteract the volumizing effect of your shampoo.
