Spas are known as relaxing places. They usually offer a menu of decadent treatments like manicures, pedicures, body scrubs and wraps. Massages are commonly offered in plain and fancy varieties. You can get a standard Swedish massage or try a more exotic treatment if your spa offers many different types.

Definition

The most basic definition of a massage is a hands-on body treatment in which a therapist uses pressure, kneading, strokes and other movements on the soft tissues, according to the American Massage Therapy Association. The definition has expanded to include the use of other objects, such as hot stones, in place of the hands and the incorporation of scented oils as well as other sensory additions. Spas usually offer basic and more exotic versions.

Types

Swedish massages are offered at almost every spa because they are the most popular type. They are often done for relaxation. Deep tissue massage, another popular offering, can benefit sore muscles. The spa locator website SpaFinder explains other options may include aromatherapy massages, which incorporate therapeutic scented oils into the treatment; stone massages, in which hot or cold stones are used on the body; and reflexology, which massages the foot in a therapeutic way that concentrates on pressure points corresponding to body organs.
Some spas offer couples massages in which you can share a treatment room with your partner.

Preparation

Full body massages require you to disrobe. Spas have private massage rooms where you can undress in comfort, lie down on the therapy table and cover yourself before the therapist enters. It is easier for the therapist to work on you when you are naked. Most spas realize some people are uncomfortable with undressing completely. They let you leave your underwear on if you prefer. The therapist will keep you draped throughout the treatment if you strip down completely, Massagetherapy.com explains.

Time Frame

You select the length of your massage when you book your treatment. Most spas offer massages of at least 30 minutes. Or if you prefer a very long indulgence, some massages can last from 90 minutes to 2 hours. The average time is an hour. Some spas also offer shorter massages that can be combined with other treatments. For example, a 15 or 30 minute head and neck massage or foot treatment can often be added to a manicure, pedicure or facial.

Benefits

Some spa treatments, such as facials and manicures, are done for aesthetic purposes, but massages have several benefits. They can relieve muscle pain, fight stress and help you relax. The Mayo Clinic states they may even boost your immune system, lower your blood pressure and improve anxiety and depression. They are an excellent spa treatment choice if you want benefits beyond a better complexion or painted nails.
