How to Maintain a Human Hair Wig

Human hair wigs are realistic looking and feeling. Keeping a human hair wig looking good requires regular maintenance. On average, a human hair wig should be washed once or twice a week. To determine when a human hair wig needs to be washed, look at it and smell it. If it looks dirty or smells dirty, it is time to wash it.

Step 1

Comb the wig gently to remove tangles using a wig comb.

Step 2

Fill a large bowl or sink with cold or lukewarm water. Add two squirts of wig shampoo to the water. Swish your hand around in the water to create a lather.

Step 3

Submerge the wig in the soapy water. Gently swish the wig around in the water to clean the hair. Scrub the wig cap gently with your hand to remove dirt and body oils.

Step 4

Remove the wig from the soapy water and gently squeeze out excess water with your hands. Place the wig on a wig form.

Step 5

Drain the soapy water out of the sink or bowl. Refill the sink or bowl with clean cold or lukewarm water.

Step 6

Submerge the wig in the clean water and gently swish it around to remove the shampoo residue.

Step 7

Remove the wig from the water and gently squeeze out excess water with your hands. Place the wig back on the wig form.

Step 8

Drain the sink or bowl and add clean cold water.

Step 9

Apply wig conditioner to the wig, distributing it through the hair evenly and being careful to avoid the wig cap. Allow the conditioner to remain on the hair for five minutes. The wig can be left on the wig form while conditioning.

Step 10

Submerge the wig in the clean water and gently swish it around to rinse out the conditioner.

Step 11

Remove wig from the water and gently squeeze out the excess water. Place the wig on a clean towel and pat dry.

Step 12

Shake out the wig gently and place it on the wig form. Leave the wig to dry in an area out of the sun or dry it under a setting dryer set on low heat. If you do not have a setting dryer you can use a handheld blow dryer set on low heat.

Step 13

Comb and style the wig once the hair has dried. Use a wig comb to style the hair. If you choose to style the wig with hot curlers, be careful to avoid allowing the curlers to touch the wig cap. Spray wig hairspray on the hair to set the style.

Step 14

Store the wig on a wig form whenever you are not wearing it.

Tips and Warnings

  • In a pinch you can use baby shampoo in place of wig shampoo. Check with the wig manufacturer first, though.
