Coconut oil has been found to have numerous benefits when used externally. A study in the Journal of the American Contact Dermatitis Society reports that virgin coconut oil is useful in the treatment of virus, fungi and bacteria, all of which can cause acne and skin problems. Using coconut oil on the face to reap its benefits on the skin is simple, and can be done a few different ways.

Oil Cleansing Method

Step 1

Test a patch of skin before applying coconut oil to the entire face. This will help determine whether you have any allergies or sensitivity to the oil. Place a drop of coconut oil in the palm of your hands, then warm it by gently holding your hands together. Rub the oil on a delicate skin area, such as inside the forearm or on the neck. If you experience a rash or itching, do not proceed with the facial treatment.

Step 2

Cleanse your face with warm water only, and then pat the skin dry.

Step 3

Mix 2 tbsp. of castor oil with 2 tbsp. of coconut oil. (This is the standard recipe for normal skin. If your skin is oily, use 3 tbsp. of castor to 1 tbsp. of coconut. If dry, use 1 tbsp. of castor to 3 tbsp. of coconut.)

Step 4

Boil 4 cups of water in a pot, and then pour the water into a large bowl. Place the bowl where you can comfortably place your face over it to absorb the steam. When the bowl is in place, apply the oil mixture to your face, massaging gently as you do. Put a towel over your head and the bowl and lower your face until you are 8 inches from the water.

Step 5

Sit with your face over the water for 10 minutes. Use a warm washcloth to clean the oil off your face, and then do a final rinse with lukewarm water. Use the oil cleansing method no more than three times per week.

Coconut Oil Face Mask

Step 1

Mash 1/2 of an avocado in a glass bowl, and then add 1/2 tsp. of coconut oil and 1/2 tsp. of honey. A study done at Charles Stuart University in Australia showed that honey has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it good for acne.

Step 2

Apply the mixture to the face, and allow to sit for 45 minutes. Due to the fact that there is oil and honey in the mask mixture, the application will not completely dry on your face.

Step 3

Take a wet soft cloth or paper towel and wipe the mask mixture from your face.

Step 4

Rinse the remainder of the mask off your face with warm water. Be sure to get all of the residue removed.

Step 5

Perform a final rinse of your face with lukewarm water. This mask treatment will leave your skin feeling extremely soft and smooth. As with any facial mask, do not apply more than once a week.

Tips and Warnings

  • Coconut oil is antiviral and antifungal, so it can draw out toxins with the initial use. This may cause a pimple or two to appear. Stick with the treatment and you will see results.
  • If you experience severe swelling, redness or itch when using either coconut oil treatment, discontinue use.
