Mayonnaise consists of eggs, oil and vinegar--all of which are good for your hair. Add olive oil to the mix and you have a hair mask that will help calm frizz and restore moisture to your hair. While the vinegar in the mayonnaise works to lift residue and increases shine, the mixture of oils conditions your scalp, and seals the cuticle layer of each hair strand. Eggs are the icing on the cake, so to speak. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that eggs contain biotin, a nutrient that strengthens your hair.
Step 1
Peel a banana and mash it up in a bowl using a fork. Bananas contain potassium, which helps soften dry hair cuticles, making your hair look smoother and silkier.
Step 2
Mix 3 tbsp. of mayonnaise in with the mashed banana. Add 1 tbsp. of olive oil to the mixture and mix well.
Step 3
Apply the mask to dry hair. Scoop the mask out of the bowl using your hands and massage it into your hair and scalp.
Step 4
Wrap your hair in plastic wrap or slip on an old shower cap after applying the mask to your hair. Leave the mask on for approximately 30 minutes.
Step 5
Rinse the mask from your hair, then shampoo lightly. Rinse with cool water. Allow your hair to air dry.
Tips and Warnings
- Some brands of mayonnaise already contain olive oil. If you use a brand made with olive oil, you don't need to add extra olive oil to the mask. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and store any remaining mask in your refrigerator. Discard after one week.
- Do not apply the mayonnaise and olive oil mask to your hair when it is wet. Removing the oil from hair that was wet before application is difficult and requires repeated washings over several days.
