Himalayan crystal salt is mined from a dried-up sea that existed 25 million years ago in the Himalaya mountains. It is a pure, high-quality salt that contains many trace minerals needed for optimum body function. Himalayan crystal salt is used as table salt, in the bath, as Sole Therapy, respiratory inhalers, and to make lamps and candle holders. Proponents claim many health benefits to using Himalayan crystal salt, although there are few scientific studies to back any claims. Always consult your health practitioner before using any product to treat a health condition.

Salt Lamps and Candle Holders

Ions are particles that have an extra electron attached to the atom. They carry either a positive or negative charge. Positively charged ions are thought by some to cause free-radical damage in the body, while negatively charged ions are considered to be good for the body. Positive ions are created by television sets, computer monitors and microwaves. Many sources claim that Himalayan crystal salt lamps emit negatively charged ions that neutralize excess positive ions, but no definitive scientific study proves this. These pink crystal lamps emit a warm glow.

Table Salt

Because Himalayan table salt is mined from an ancient source, proponents claim it is better for your health than regular table salt or sea salt because it is free of environmental pollution. Crystal salt is also purported to contain 84 trace minerals that your body needs to maintain proper body function. Trace minerals have been shown to regulate water absorption in the body, aid in nutrient absorption, regulate blood sugar levels, balance cellular pH, promote bone strength and support muscle function.

Crystal Salt Bath

Himalayan crystal salt can be used in the bath the same way sea salt and Epsom salts are. Supporters claim that the trace minerals and negative ions in crystal salt penetrate the skin, producing a cleansing and detoxifying effect. To make a crystal salt bath, add about 2 lbs. of crystal salt to water that just covers bottom of the tub. Let it sit until dissolved--about 30 to 60 minutes. Then fill the tub with water. Soak in the water for at least 20 to 30 minutes.

Sole Therapy

Sole therapy is the fusion of Himalayan crystal salt with pure water. In her book "Water and Salt, the Essence of Life," Barbara Hendel, M.D., highlights a study made by Inter-University of Graz, Austria, on the benefits of Himalayan crystal salt therapy. The study found that patients who drank the sole therapy mixture saw positive changes in the function of their respiratory, circulatory and nervous systems. They also reported increases in the quality of sleep, energy, and concentration. However, no independent studies verify these claims. You should always consult your health practitioner before using alternative health products.

Himalayan Crystal Salt Inhaler

The theory behind the Himalayan salt inhaler is that the minerals and negative ions from the salt cleanse the entire respiratory system, including the sinuses, nasal cavities, throat and lungs, when inhaled. The inhaler was highlighted on the Dr. Oz show in February 2010 and may help with allergies, sinus infections and breathing difficulties. However, no scientific studies have yet backed up these claims. You should always consult a registered health practitioner before using salt products.
