Nail polish makes your nails "pop" and adds a finished touch to your overall look, but it's not the only way to get your nails to look smooth and shiny. Buffers take off surface ridges and stains and bring the nail surface to a high shine, all without chemical treatments or expensive manicures. Most buffers have three sides which each smooth in its own way. The three together create that salon finish in only a few minutes.
Step 1
Remove your nail polish, even if it's just a clear coat. Use nail polish remover on a clean cotton ball. Wash and dry your hands.
Step 2
Trim your nails with sharp nail scissors or nail clippers. Do not plan on using the buffer to sand away large amounts of length.
Step 3
Use the roughest side of your buffer on the top surface of your nail. Buff back and forth to smooth out vertical ridges. Don't buff too deeply or you'll thin and weaken the nail. Only buff until you've removed surface ridges.
Step 4
Use the second roughest side of the nail buffer to smooth out the rough scratches and marks made by the first buffer. This type of buffing helps nails grow by increasing blood flow, according to Cleopatra's Choice.
Step 5
Use the smoothest side to buff your nails smooth. Continue buffing until your achieve a high shine, almost as if you painted on a coating of clear nail polish.
Step 6
Rub a few drops of olive oil, almond oil or any other skin oil on your nails and cuticles to complete your look and moisturize your nails and hands. Repeat the buffing treatment whenever you start to lose your shine or gain more ridges.
