If you experience itching after shaving, you are likely suffering from ingrown hair, says dermatologist Jeannette Graf on "Cosmopolitan" magazine's website. An ingrown hair occurs when the removed hair grows back into the follicle and inflames the area. Individuals with curly hair are more prone to the condition, as well as those who shave the pubic area. If the itching is accompanied by pain or pus, the ingrown hair may have become infected and you should contact your doctor.

Step 1

Moisturize an aloe vera lotion into your skin according to product directions. Aloe vera can be purchased over-the-counter and can ease irritation and itching caused by shaving.

Step 2

Apply an ingrown-hair serum that contains salicylic acid to the skin according to product directions. If you have any itching after shaving the pubic area, Graf recommends applying a salicylic-acid-based solution to the affected area twice a day.

Step 3

Apply an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream according to product directions. Repeat the application two to three times daily. According to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, applying a 1 percent concentration of hydrocortisone cream can stop itching.

Step 4

Massage the area with warm water and a clean washcloth in a circular motion to help encourage the hair to grow out of the follicle.

Step 5

Apply a cool compress, which may also stop itching and irritation after shaving. Leave the compress on the skin for several minutes until the itching eases.

Tips and Warnings

  • To stop ingrown hairs, you may want to consider alternative hair-removal methods. Some examples are electrolysis, waxing and laser hair removal.
  • Avoid shaving if itching occurs. The Palo Alto Medical Foundation recommends not shaving for at least two months if you develop itching after hair removal. Do not scratch the area while the ingrown hair heals. You will increase your risk of infection. Do not use aftershave to stop itching after shaving pubic hair. This will irritate the skin and cause a stinging sensation.
