A chronic skin disorder, psoriasis occurs when skin cells replicate at a rapid pace. The new cells reproduce faster than the old cells are shed, creating patches of red, swollen skin covered by dry, silvery scales. While MayoClinic.com states that no cure exists for psoriasis, herbalists recommend the use of lavender oil to relieve symptoms associated with the condition. However, as with all alternative remedies, consult with your health care provider before use.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a cyclical condition that can appear anywhere on the body, most commonly on the scalp, knees, elbows, buttocks and wrists. Symptoms may include scales, inflamed patches of skin, itching, burning, pitted nails and stiff joints. The disorder, caused by a malfunction of the immune system, starts or worsens by triggers such as stress, infection, cold weather and lifestyle choices.
Lavender
Lavender, a species of mint indigenous to the Mediterranean region, grows to heights of 3 feet. It bears aromatic purple flowers that provide therapeutic benefits. Cultivated extensively in England, France, Italy and Norway, the easy-to-grow plant requires sandy soil, lots of sun and good drainage.
Lavender Oil Benefits
An invaluable first aid remedy, lavender essential oil contains potent antibacterial and antiseptic agents that help heal burning and itching. According to the book "Prescription for Herbal Healing," lavender essential oil contains two compounds, linalool and linalyl aldehyde, that reduce the perception of pain and inhibit inflammation. The oil's calming and anti-inflammatory effects also help to soothe redness, swelling and joint stiffness related to psoriasis. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that studies show that lavender oil can reduce dry, scaly skin patches and control pain. In addition, the center says that numerous small, inconclusive studies found that lavender oil may relieve anxiety and stress, common triggers of psoriasis flare-ups.
Use
Lavender oil is used in its natural state, aromatherapy, baths, compresses and teas. To treat psoriasis, you can prepare a bath by combining 3 drops lavender oil and 3 drops chamomile oil to a tub of warm water. In addition, add a few drops of lavender oil to your favorite cream or lotion and gently rub it into the affected areas of your skin.
Warnings
Never ingest lavender oil; the herb can cause an allergic reaction resulting in nausea, vomiting, headache and chills. Additionally, people with gallstones or biliary tract obstructions should refrain from using lavender oil both orally and topically, as should pregnant and nursing women.
